  • How to Write a Brilliant Crime Mystery/Detective Novel

In this video I go through ten key points of how to write a crime mystery or detective novel, such as my new book the Disappearance of Florentina J. Lockhart, available on amazon for $0.99. 1) You must have an intriguing plot. it must grab the readers attention. The crime could be impossible -- a man in two places at once, or lurid for example a politician found dead in lady's underwear. 2) You must have a great resolution, with revelations that will shock the reader. 3) In the middle of the novel, in the filling of the sandwich, you must give hints as to what will happen in the resolution. 4) You must then add in red herrings in order to distract the reader from the truth. 5) You must try and incorporate some perfect red herrings whereby you simultaneously tell the reader the truth and y...

5) You must try and incorporate some perfect red herrings whereby you simultaneously tell the reader the truth and yet send them in exactly the opposite direction. 6) The middle of the novel must be cast in the form of mini intrigues and mini revelations. 7) Once you have this basis you can develop characters and scenes, for example a bad guy or a beach and sunset in Mexico. 8) At the end everything that you used as a point of intrigue, everything that you flagged up as mysterious should be properly explained. 9) You don't need to describe the personal lives of the detectives in my opinion. We don't need to know if they are chain smokers, drunks, divorced, fans of Mozart and Bach etc. In fact, according to my opinion you don't even need detectives. Instead you could work with journalists or internet sleuths. 10) Begin the action not only on the first page but in the first paragraph.

Documentary which profiles a new wave of Italian crime fiction that has emerged to challenge the conventions of the detective novel. There are no happy endings in these noir tales, only revelations about Italy's dark heart - a world of corruption, unsolved murders and the mafia. The programme features exclusive interviews with the leading writers from this new wave of noir, including Andrea Camilleri (creator of the Inspector Montablano Mysteries) and Giancarlo De Cataldo (Romanzo Criminale), who explains how his work as a real-life investigating judge inspired his work. From the other side of the law, Massimo Carlotto talks about how his novels were shaped by his wrongful conviction for murder and years spent on the run from the police. The film also looks at the roots of this new wave. Carlo Emilio Gadda (That Awful Mess) used the detective novel to expose the corruption that existed during Mussolini's fascist regime and then, after the Second World War, Leonardo Sciascia's crime novels (The Day of The Owl) tackled the rise of the Sicilian mafia. These writers established the rules of a new kind of noir that drew on real events and offered no neat endings. Also featuring Italian writers Carlo Lucarelli and Barbara Baraldi, the film uses rarely seen archive from Italian television. Production : BBC Four
