In this video I go through ten key points of how to write a crime mystery or detective novel, such as my new book the Disappearance of Florentina J. Lockhart, available on amazon for $0.99. 1) You must have an intriguing plot. it must grab the readers attention. The crime could be impossible -- a man in two places at once, or lurid for example a politician found dead in lady's underwear. 2) You must have a great resolution, with revelations that will shock the reader. 3) In the middle of the novel, in the filling of the sandwich, you must give hints as to what will happen in the resolution. 4) You must then add in red herrings in order to distract the reader from the truth. 5) You must try and incorporate some perfect red herrings whereby you simultaneously tell the reader the truth and yet send them in exactly the opposite direction. 6) The middle of the novel must be cast in the form of mini intrigues and mini revelations. 7) Once you have this basis you can develop characters and scenes, for example a bad guy or a beach and sunset in Mexico. 8) At the end everything that you used as a point of intrigue, everything that you flagged up as mysterious should be properly explained. 9) You don't need to describe the personal lives of the detectives in my opinion. We don't need to know if they are chain smokers, drunks, divorced, fans of Mozart and Bach etc. In fact, according to my opinion you don't even need detectives. Instead you could work with journalists or internet sleuths. 10) Begin the action not only on the first page but in the first paragraph.

Even readers who don’t consider themselves fans of this intriguing genre are familiar with names such as Hercule Poirot, Sam Spade, Hannibal Lecter, and Robert Langdon, and understand the deep and lasting impact this writing has had on literature as a whole. An utterly captivating and compelling genre, mystery and suspense has leapt off the pages of the old dime store paperbacks, magazines, and comic books onto big screens, small screens, radio serials, podcasts, websites, and more. You’ll find elements, characters, and references permeating popular culture and news reports worldwide, and bleeding into other literary genres such as romance, political thrillers, sports stories, and even biographies. Booklist said about The Wish to Kill, the first Alex Kertész mystery, "First novelist Hannah has hit upon an engaging premise;a mystery series starring a research scientist working at the University of Jerusalem. She has the makings of a good series: a sympathetic hero and an intriguing, nicely evoked setting." Murder with a French Accent, the second book in the series, takes Alex to Toulouse, where a biotech company has run into trouble trying to produce a genetically engineered strain of bacteria that he created. In Mystery Time, book number three, Alex and Hildegard are faced with two mysteries. One involves the death of their colleague and the other is the mystery surrounding the old watch and its special relationship to time.

To understand how and why this works so well, we have to look at the origins of detective novels, going all the way back to Edward Allen Poe first showing us how feats of logic (as opposed to feats of raw strength) could be engrossing.
